Reporting a wrong reading

This is the most useful thing you can send us, and the hardest to reproduce without detail. If you can, include:

  • What the object was, and what color it actually is.
  • What Iromi said, including whether it sounded confident or hedged.
  • What the lighting was — daylight, a warm bulb, an office ceiling, a dim room.
  • Whether you had calibrated to that light.

The lighting and calibration details matter more than they sound like they do. Most color mistakes are lighting mistakes.

Getting better readings

Calibrate to the light you’re in

Tap Calibrate, point at something white or grey, and tap Set. This is the single biggest improvement available, and it takes about two seconds.

A mid-grey card works better than white paper, especially under warm bulbs — bright white can overload the camera’s red channel, and a measurement taken from an overloaded channel isn’t reliable. Iromi will refuse a sample it can’t trust and tell you why.

Re-calibrate when you change rooms. A calibration is a statement about the light you were standing in.

Fill the center of the screen

Iromi reads a small square at the exact center. If that square straddles two colors — a seam, a pattern, the edge of a button — the average is a color that isn’t there. Iromi usually notices and says “you’re on an edge,” but a flat area gives a better answer.

When it says it’s unsure

It means it. A hedged answer is a real answer about a real uncertainty, and the suggestion attached to it is the fastest way to a better reading. “Too dark” means add light or switch on the torch; “too bright” means move out of the glare, which is the opposite fix.

Accessibility

Every accessibility setting is free and always will be: voice, speaking rate, verbosity, haptic feedback and intensity, confidence tones, appearance, and full VoiceOver and Dynamic Type support.

If something is hard to reach, hard to hear, or hard to read, that’s a bug and we want to hear about it. Tell us what you were trying to do and where you got stuck. Reports from people who use the app with the screen off are the most valuable ones we get.

Common questions

Does Iromi need an internet connection?

No. It works entirely offline and always will — the app makes no network requests at all.

Is there a subscription?

No, and there won’t be. The core of the app — point, identify, hear, plus the whole confidence system and lighting calibration — is free forever. See what stays free.

What’s the tip jar?

An optional, one-off way to support the work. There’s a Support button on the main screen and another in Settings; tapping either opens Ko-fi in your browser, and the app tells you that before you tap. It unlocks nothing — everything in Iromi is already yours — and it will never prompt you, badge itself, or appear after you’ve used the app a certain number of times.

If something goes wrong with a payment, that’s between you and Ko-fi, but tell us anyway and we’ll help you chase it.

Does it collect anything about me?

No. See Privacy.

Why won’t it name a color sometimes?

Because it can’t stand behind the answer. Under those conditions a name would be a guess, and a guess you can’t check is worse than being told to add some light.
